Masking & Identity: How Hiding Hurts More Than It Helps
Explore how masking affects identity, mental health, and burnout & why unmasking safely can help you feel like yourself again.

Why We Mask & What It Costs
If you've ever caught yourself changing your tone, forcing a smile, or keeping your stims on lockdown just to avoid judgment, you have masked. Masking is that survival strategy many neurodivergent people learn to fit the expectations of a neurotypical world. Most neurodivergent people do it, especially in school, work, or new social settings. And for a while, it might help you feel safe. It keeps you from standing out, protects you from ridicule, maybe even helps you "pass." But here is the part that most people don't talk about. masking always costs you something. Your energy, your authenticity, and sometimes your entire sense of self.
You start to feel like you're performing all day, and when you finally get home, you're exhausted but don't even know why. That's because masking isn't just pretending, it's filtering everything. Your facial expressions, your voice, your movement, your reactions. It's managing other people's comfort instead of your own. Over time, you forget what it's like to just be.
Research, especially with adults on the autism spectrum, finds that masking often ties directly to burnout, anxiety, low self worth, and feeling disconnected from who you actually are. While masking can help you "get by," it costs a stunning amount of mental energy and sometimes your sense of self worth.
So How Do You Start Unmasking Safely?
Unmasking takes time, and most importantly, it takes support. That could look like experimenting with being a little more yourself in low stakes moments. That could look like allowing yourself to stim around a trusted person. In coaching we don't rip the mask off. We gently loosen it in places when you're ready. We explore where masking helping you and where it is hurting you. And we start to build a version of self expression that feels both safe and real. You deserve to feel like yourself again. Not in secret. Not just when no one is looking.
